Troy Michael Maes, 64, passed away unexpectedly on September 9, 2026 at Parkview Hospital in Pueblo, CO. He was born on May 1, 1962 in New London, CT to Alfonso & Ercilia Maes. Born to a military family, Troy and his family moved to many locations throughout his early childhood. When his father made the decision to retire from the Navy, his parents moved the family back to their hometown of Trinidad, CO.
Troy graduated from Trinidad High School in 1982 and immediately joined the United States Navy. He was an Airman and served 4 years on the aircraft carrier the USS Forrestal. He also served 2 years in the reserves following his carrier duties. Troy was very proud of his military service. After the military, Troy went to a trade school in Oregon to become a certified heavy equipment operator. He also attended Trinidad State Jr. College and received his certificate in Auto Mechanics and took classes in OSHA Compliance. Furthering his education, he then attended Arapahoe Community College and received an Associates Degree in Applied Science in Heavy Equipment specializing in hydraulics. After college, Troy moved to Denver and began working for a high voltage electric company where he used his training in heavy equipment and also helped run cable to many large facilities including the new runway at Centennial Airport, DIA, Coors Field, and the New Mile High Stadium. In 2001, Troy moved his family back to Trinidad and started his final career in the Oil and Natural Gas Industry. He had many titles throughout his 20+ years of dedicated employment. Troy was well respected in the gas industry for his knowledge and skills in many aspects and was often called upon by his co-workers for advice and help. Troy finally retired in June 2024 and was still giving advice to anyone that would call on him.
Troy joined the Fisher’s Peak Volunteer Fire Department in 2016 and was proud to serve for 9 years until he made the decision to depart. He was currently an active member and a team leader of the Las Animas County Search and Rescue team.
Troy was an avid outdoorsman. He loved camping, fishing, hunting, kayaking, and hiking. He also loved a good music festival and car show events. Troy loved spending time with his family and friends and was always the life of any party. Troy never met a stranger and was always willing to help others. Even in death, he will help save lives around the country with his precious gifts of life as he had opted to be an organ donor.
Troy is proceeded in death by his Maternal Grandparents, Jose and Maclovia Tafoya and Paternal Grandfather, Tony Maes, who instilled the value of hard work and what it meant to be a true cowboy. He is also proceeded by his Brother, Alfonso T. Maes Jr, known as Little Sonny, and his Nephew, Jacob Bettger. He is survived by his parents, Alfonso & Ercilia Maes, his wife, Beulah “BJ” Maes, and his children, Daughters, Chloe & Leah Maes, Sons, Dante Maes, Joshua Madrid, and Justin (Sydnee Waller) Roberts, and Jesse (Anna) Roberts. His Grandchildren, Luca Maes-Lechuga and Hartley Madrid. Also surviving are his Siblings, Brother Glen (Evelyn) Maes, Sisters, Kim (Ray) Bettger and Kelly (Troy) Portenier. Nephews, Glen Jr. (Melissa) Maes and Jonathan (Nicolette) Bettger. Nieces, Brandy Maes, Jonah (Austin) Miller and Cassidy Maes. Also, 4 Great-Nieces and 1 Great-Nephew. Troy’s father is proud that 4 generations are represented here.
Services will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026 at The Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Trinidad, CO. Rosary will be recited at 9:30 am and Funeral Mass at 10:00 am. Troy’s final resting place will be at The Catholic Cemetery immediately following.
